Well, Jack Bauer did it. I am convinced that it took someone like Bauer to finally kill bin Laden. His identity will only be known to Obama and a few others. I have doubts that Pakistan was let in on the operation until it is over or at least underway. With the likelihood that the Pakistani intelligence force having been infiltrated by terrorist groups, I would be shocked that if the U.S. had informed them of the operation being planned. I think it is just good PR for Obama to thank Pakistan for its help. This way it is a face saving thing for the Pakistani government as it always insisted that bin Laden was not in Pakistan. By giving them credit, Obama is hoping that they will give more cooperation in the future. Anyways, it is a great victory for the country and the fight against terrorism.

Having said that we can't let our guards down. Having been killed by the U.S., bin Laden is not only a hero but also now a martyr to the extremists. While bin Laden is the face of al Qaeda, there are many other who do the planning still at large. It is likely they will plan an attack in the near future for revenge and to show that they are still relevant. So I like Obama not gloating in his speech. It is a great victory but we the war is far from over.

I wondered if you would get on your blog and you did not disappoint! It doesn't seem real since we've been hunting this guy for so long.

Interesting that he was pretty much out in the open and not in some cave in the mountains. He must have been getting over confident. Still 10 years of hiding will do that to you.

The next year will be interesting to see how al qaeda retaliates, if it can. If they attack now, we will be on our highest alert. But if they wait, the impact won't be as great.

I am interested to see if we captured any communications from the Pakistanis to any al qaeda members during the raid. If so, it may have opened up some more clues on who these people are and how they operate.

Never like to see people die, but better him than American lives. Hopefully this is the first step for world peace.

What do you think this does for Obama politically? We've been saying that something like the capture of killing of bin Laden would give him a huge push. I'm interested to see the polls now. He's gotten some good support from across the aisle. I guess there isn't much to say if you're a Republican right now.

  2. The fact that bin Laden lived in a mansion near an army base seems to me that there was some protection from the Pakistani intelligence force. He did not have internet or phone service in order to avoid the big ears of the U.S. This is why you can't just depend on technology but need smart people on the ground. I would not be surprised that we have Pakistanis watching the compound on our behalf since it would be difficult for Americans or any westerners to be around without causing suspicion. But of course that will never be disclosed to protect the identities of our helpers.

I was shocked that they dumped his body into the sea. I understand they have to follow some Islamic laws but this would lead to many conspiracy theories to discredit Obama. I can see Donald Trump demanding a death certificate or autopsy report.

This will give Obama a push in the polls for now. But I don't think it would help a lot at election time. Remember Clinton's slogan: "It is all about the economy, stupid!" The first Bush won a war and lost election shortly after. The only thing this does is that the Republicans can't say that he is weaker than their candidates on national defense since he has been challenged and made a right decision. None of the Republicans, unless McCain comes back, can say that.
