I don't know why Obama decided to release a picture of him shooting skeets.  It really would not change the mind of the NRA supporters.  As expected they express doubt about the authenticity of the picture.  I don't know what is the big deal about presidents able to use a gun.  Clinton also made sure that people knew that he hunted when he was president.  It is not macho.  Anybody can fire a gun.  Six year olds have done it and to tragic results.  So who cares if the president have shot before?  Now, if any president can hunt using bow and arrow, that would be impressive.

As I predicted, by predicting SF would win I have given them the kiss of death.  From almost a blow out to an exciting finish was great.  If SF had won, future Super Bowl coaches will be so paranoid of a power outage stopping their momentum that they will bring their own generators to insure no stoppage!

I am not surprised by Indiana beating Michigan at home.  But now Michigan must beat OSU at home or they will be in real trouble.

Well, I can agree with you on the gun pictures, but everything a President does is for publicity and politics.

He has to show the gun people that he doesn't hate guns and even if he got that notion out there, it may help in the future. Now, if he was horrible at shooting and looked like Dukakis in a tank, then he probably wouldn't do it.

Plus, he supposedly had gone skeet shooting before, so he may truly like doing it. Though, I don't recall seeing him skeet shoot previously!

I really thought that SF would pull it out in the end. The sequence at the end of the game was goofy. Not sure why SF had such bad play calling, plus time management was horrible.

I am still impressed with Kaepernick. He played pretty well and didn't seem to be too intimidated.

UM still impresses me by hanging in there against IU. Nothing to be ashamed of in losing to them there. I do want to make one small complaint though. I am getting a little annoyed at the state of college basketball, where all these teams are just jacking up 3 point shots.

I know it's part of the game, but I am not a huge fan of it. I think the line needs to be moved to the NBA line. I'd also like to see the play clock moved to at least 30 seconds.

  2. I agree that everything a president does is for publicity and politics but I just don't know what positive effect it will have for him. I am sure nobody on either side of the debate will change his mind after seeing this photo.

I agree that there is too much 3 point shooting and that the clock should be moved to 30 seconds. But then I am thinking that with less time there will be more desperate 3 point attempt to beat the clock! The problem is that there is no good back to the basket players in college or the NBA. Tim Duncan may have been the last great post up player in college. Yao Ming was the last great post up player in the NBA. Also there is a lack of mid range shooters. This is understandable since if you shoot 33% from 3 point line you will be better off than someone shooting under 50% from mid range. So people tend to practice 3 pointers. Moving the line back can help but there is still a lot of 3 point attempts in the NBA. With college players the game may get very ugly with low scoring until the shooters adjust and then they will be jacking up 3s from 23 feet instead of 20! So I don't think there is any good solution to this.

It's funny you should mention about the desperation 3 point attempt. I was going to write that but decided not to.

And you touched upon not having any good post players and mid-range shooters in college anymore. I didn't even think of that.

I remember hearing about the evolution of basketball being about dunks and 3 pointers a few years back, when the NBA considered raising the rims and moving the 3 point line out further. The problem is the corner/baseline 3 can't get any further out. Maybe they should eliminate that part of the arc?

Basically, the kids are losing fundamentals and are trying to emulate the NBA guys, so there is no mid-range game anymore.

I finally saw that photo of Obama shooting. I thought it was done recently, but apparently it was shot back in the fall and just released. Interesting. I actually feel better that it was taken a while ago and that it wasn't some stunt where they made him go shooting last weekend.

I found this article on the NRA and gun clubs. It's an interesting membership building tactic.

UM plays OSU tonight in Ann Arbor. I am predicting a 6 point victory for UM.
