Wow, congrats to MSU for the thrilling victory today! It could not be a better day for the Big Ten. (Unless Minnesota also had won). But I think Big Ten fans would have taken 3 out of 4 before the day started. Jim Harbaugh has not been on the job for 2 days and he is going to have nightmares already seeing how MSU and OSU came up with big victories. It is going to be that much more difficult for Harbaugh to beat out those teams now. The Big Ten east has actually outplayed the SEC west! So instead of Big Ten east trying to be SEC north as Urban Meyer suggested, maybe SEC west should try to become Big Ten south!
With the 3 victories today, the Big Ten is guaranteed 5 wins with Iowa still to play Tennessee. So I claim victory over the Las Vegas oddsmakers, the LA Times and LBOAYM since they all predicted smaller number of victories for the Big Ten. So what if my predictions are not 100% accurate in terms of individual games. It is the number of victories that count as in all sports.
Despite my allegiance to the Big Ten, I will take Oregon over OSU. Their victory over FSU was amazing and I think they are the best team over the whole season. Plus I don't want Harbaugh to have worse nightmares.
I am really surprised at how well Wisconsin did with Alvarez. Also, congrats to OSU which played a very good game with their 3rd string QB.
ReplyDeleteI was really disappointed by the way Minnesota played. I thought they were a good team this year and maybe the inexperience of playing in a bowl showed.
I am also predicting Oregon to win the championship. They were quite impressive in beating FSU. The remaining question is, who will Braxton Miller be rooting for? There are rumors that he will be transferring from OSU to Oregon.

Thought this was an interesting opinion piece:

I see his logic that if Harbaugh is paid 7 million and the university argues that a winning football team will increase alum contribution to cover most of the salary. Then since most donors are rich and at 40% tax bracket they will only lose 60% of their money when they donate. Thus the government is subsidizing 40% of Harbaugh's salary.
ReplyDeleteTo me both the University and the author's argument are theoretical. There is no prove how much alum contribution increase if say Harbaugh win more games next year than they did this year. It could be more than his salary or less. If more, then he actually has made money for the university. Then the 40% argument by author is not good since the extra contribution may go to the general fund and the government may actually has to give the public school less money in the long run.
As I say all these are theoretical. Harbaugh's salary is what the market (ESPN money) will bear. The tax deduction is the advantage of winners of the capitalist system. So in either case, unless we want to change to a socialist or communist system, it is what it is.
