The pope has finished his trip to the U.S.  Everywhere he went he was a rock star.  I am not Catholic but I like this guy.  He speaks his mind but not down at other people.  He could have lived lavishly but he chose a simple residence.  He rides not in limos or SUVs but simple cars.  He is an important figure but does not act like one.  I hope he heads the catholic church for many years to come.

As popular as the pope is, he is being criticized by both sides of the political spectrum.  This shows how divided we are.  We can't even acknowledge a great man if he disagree with us on one or two things.  Wall Street is upset at him because they think that he is calling for the redistribution of wealth.  They call him a socialist.  I think catholic teaching demands that he speaks and advocates for the poor.  He is not anti-capitalism.  On the other end, liberals are upset that he is not for gay marriages and abortion.  Nobody could have become pope if he advocated those changes.  This is what he believes.  He made it clear that he would embrace those who are gay and those who have had abortions.  I don't think it is reasonable that one man can and would make changes that are so drastically different to the church.

I may not agree with pope Francis on everything but I do have great respect for him.  I think his critics should look at the whole man and not just the things that he disagree with them.  But I am not holding my breath since politics in this country is just preaching to the choir.

I will never understand politics. I may never understand religion. I don't subscribe to either party or either faith. I know a lot of people who don't understand me. They want me to choose a side, but I never think there's a correct side. Once you start choosing sides, it limits your own thinking. Personally, I think that we need to follow our own hearts and live with what we believe in and not what someone tells us to believe in.

I hear a lot about how the pope shouldn't be allowed to express his views on climate control because he's not a scientist. Well, then the people who are saying this are not scientists either. I don't pretend to know if climate change is human made or not, but I do know that it doesn't hurt to help the environment.

The catholic church has been running ads here with the pope's quotes on marriage (which may be from scripture). I have been questioning why the church is spending the money to run these ads. Even the pope has said who is he to judge. You're not going to change minds by running the ads.

I found it interesting that Boehner decided to step down after meeting the pope. Maybe he had a moment of clarity. As much as I didn't like Boehner, I cringe to see who will replace him.

  2. Interesting about climate change you brought up. When I first visited California in the late 1970s the air quality was almost as bad as Beijing is now. I would be out of breath after one minute of pick up basketball outdoors. Today the skyline in LA is clear on most days and I can last longer playing outdoor than I did thirty years ago. I think the strict auto emission standard really helped. So even if one denies climate change due to pollution, there really is no good reason not to adopt changes in energy usage. The auto industry did not collapse with the stricter standards.

Kevin McCarthy is likely to take over from Boehner. He will have the same problems as Boehner did. I think philosophically he is similar to Boehner so it maybe the same situation in the near future. One interesting tidbit: When Kevin Spacey wanted to study for his role in House of Cards, he followed McCarthy around. McCarthy was the whip at that time, the same position Spacey had in the first season of the show. When Spacey's character turned evil and was even a murderer, McCarthy's office had to put out a disclaimer that McCarthy was not involved in any criminal activity! So if McCarthy becomes Speaker and then eventually president, they will have to put out more statements of denial!
