I read in the LA Times that Mary Brown, who is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Obamacare that has reached the Supreme Court, has just filed for bankruptcy. Among the debts that she and her husband owe are thousands of dollars in medical bills. She is one of three individuals that conservatives put out as Americans who belief that the health care law is unconstitutional. Whether the law is unconstitutional or not will be ruled by the Supreme Court soon. Meanwhile ironically, she is an example of why a mandate is necessary.
There are many flaws in the new law but it was the only law that could have passed two years ago. The law does not offer much control regarding skyrocketing cost of health care. The insurance companies still do not have much competition, can continue to raise prices and rake in huge profits. Sure, they are being forced to take in people with preexisting conditions, cover young adults up to 26 years old under the parents' plan and may have to pay for contraceptives. But the insurance companies will get lot more clients under the law and let face it, contraceptives will decrease pregnancies and pregnancies would cost insurance companies a lot more money than contraceptives.
The polls show that most people don't think the law is a good idea. One reason for that is that the majority of people HAVE insurance. Many of them get the insurance from their job and so they are afraid of any change. But anyone can lose their job or get a catastrophic illness and then suddenly they will feel different about the law. If you lose your job and have a preexisting condition, insurance companies will not take you. Many people can't leave jobs they hate because they or their spouses are sick and can't afford to lose the insurance. But of course in order for people with preexisting conditions be guaranteed coverage, everybody has to be in the risk pool. Otherwise, nobody would buy insurance until he is sick!
Mary Brown believes it is her right to decide whether she buys a product. But this is not a product of choice. We all are or will be consumer of health care unless we die suddenly without going to the hospital! Sixty billion dollars in health care cost were not paid by patients last year. Hospitals and doctors raise prices, when they can, on people who can paid. Thus the $10 aspirin the hospital charges. The government pays a big portion of the 60 billion now. So it is not a free lunch for taxpayers. Mary Brown will probably add to that uncompensated care amount with her bankruptcy.
One more thought on this case before the Supreme Court. I am sure the outcome will ride on Anthony Kennedy's decision. So there is a good chance the law will be overturned regardless of its merit. The other 8 judges will be split 4-4, I am sure. This is all so partisan as are so many things in our country today. The take I have is this: Whatever side wins in the Supreme Court may well lose in the presidential election. Which ever side loses will be so angry that they will come out in force to try to elect their candidate in November because they believe the Court is stacked against them and they want their presidential candidate be able to nominate the next justice.
I haven't been keeping up with this and don't have much to add. How the heck did the Canadians pass legislation and live with a national health care plan and not us?
ReplyDeleteI'm neither for or against a national healthcare plan, by the way. I just want to make sure that insurance costs and medical costs stay low and I don't know how we'll ever be able to do that.
Interesting take on the Supreme Court thing. Are there any justices that will be retiring soon so that Obama (assuming he is re-elected) will replace?
Also, did you catch Romney putting his foot in his mouth again? He was trying to be southern-like and everything. Guy to me is too pandering.
Lastly, I saw that Obama's approval rating is down 9 points since the gas prices went up. We've talked about this before, but there's basically nothing he can do in the short term to lower them right? Unless the conflicts in the middle east get settled, we'll see oil go up.
American's have done their part by using less oil, but I read that oil companies are cutting production since demand is low, so that's definitely not helping. Remind me to invest in big oil!

Canada, like UK, has a parliamentary system which means that the leader of the majority party is the prime minister. So their legislative branch is usually in sync with the executive branch. So while the Congress can try to stop the president in the U.S., usually that would not happen in Canada or the UK. I talked to my Canadian friends and they all seem to like their system even if they pay more taxes. I am sure they were skeptical in the beginning. As I have pointed out we rank lower than most Europeans, Japanese and Canadians in life expectancy and infant mortality and cost of health care. So why are we so worried about national health?
ReplyDeleteThe two justices that Bush and the two that Obama nominated will be there for a long time. Of the remaining justices, Ginsburg is most likely to be the next to retire. So even if Obama is reelected, it probably will not get better for the Democrats. But if he loses, Republicans will most likely gain one seat on the Supreme Court in the next 4 years.
It looks like Santorum is going to win Ala and Miss. tonight. This is completely different from the most recent polls which showed Gingrich and Romney neck to neck with Santorum about 10 points down. So this is a great surprise for him and should doom Gingrich even if he fights on. Romney didn't win but probably did better than expected from couple of weeks ago when he was a diatant third in the polls. If Gingrich drops out, we may have a broker convention although I think the Republicans will eventually come to their senses and nominate the only person who can beat Obama: Romney.
Better for Obama for the gas price to go up now then in say September. A lot of this depends on luck, such as Europe's economic situation and whether Israel bombs Iran or not. (Not luck if you believe that big oil and Netanyahu want Obama to lose.) It is going to be a toss up election if Romney is the nominee.
The prices of oil went down this week. Do you think gas price will go down next week? When oil prices goes up, gas prices immediately goes up but when oil prices goes down, gas prices stay up for a while longer. This does not seem fair to me.
I was unaware that oil went down this week. Currently it's at $106/barrel.
ReplyDeleteI did hear that gas does not go down the same rate it goes up, in relation to oil.
I have a feeling you're fishing here since you know how I feel about gas prices. Do you still believe that prices should be kept at a higher level? I personally think they should not be because it shows that no matter how much we save in gas usage, the prices will be artificially set.
If prices were to hit $5, the companies would have no problem setting them higher, in my opinion.
So what is the solution? I have no idea, but let's face it, gas consumption will always be high until a majority of vehicles don't use it.
Ironically, Bob Lutz, former CEO at GM recently came out with an article/blog about the Chevy Volt, (which has been lampooned by right wing extremists.)
These right wingers call it the Obama socialist car, but what they ignorantly don't know is that Lutz, a card carrying member of the GOP, actually green-lighted the car during the Bush years.
In fact, he sites that the truth should be told about this and says that these same right wingers were the ones yelling at GM for NOT making gas alternative vehicles.
So, as with most of the things we come back to on this blog, it's all about politics! And oil and gas prices are a political pawn in politician and national leaders eyes.
Onto something even more serious:
Who are your Final Four picks?
I have the following teams in the Final Four:
1. Michigan State (had to have them here or else you would have yelled at me for not wanting to jinx my team)
2. Duke
3. Kansas
4. Ohio State
I have Kansas vs. Duke in the finals with Duke winning.
-LBOAYM
My final four are Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio State and North Carolina. Missouri to beat Kentucky and North Carolina to beat OSU. Missouri is my champion. That is the only reason I did not pick MSU to make the final four. The couple of times I saw Missouri I was very impressed. On paper Kentucky is the best team but I don't want to pick the favorite. Even though MSU is better the OSU, OSU can beat Syracuse without Fab Mello, I believe. So lucky for them to be in the right regional. I don't like Kansas, which is inferior to Missouri, I believe. Duke is not as good as usual and I don't think they can get past Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteNot that it matters since Cal is getting killed by South Florida but I don't understand why two teams are playing for a 12th seed. BYU is also an at large team but by beating Iona, they get a 14 seed. Wouldn't that mean that the committee believe that Cal and South Florida are better than BYU? If that is the case, shouldn't one of them get BYU's spot and BYU has to play against one of the 15th seeds who are now into the round of 64 without playing in? One thing for sure, the state of the Pac 12 is absolutely dismal!
What is your take on the situation of Knicks now that D'Antoni is out?
You know, I didn't even notice that the play-in games resulted in different seedings. That's pretty messed up.
ReplyDeleteI thought Missouri was pretty good but think that MSU matches up pretty well against them, so that's why I picked MSU over Mizzou.
I can't see Kentucky going all the way, only because I don't think Calipari is that good of a coach. I think if he goes up against coach K, he will get out coached. Duke has the talent to hang with them and play a disciplined game.
Was shocked to hear about D'antoni resigning yesterday. Apparently, he had asked the Knicks to trade Melo to the Nets for Deron Williams and the Knicks wouldn't do it.
Only time will tell to see if they can get things together, but I've gotta think that unless Lin looks out for himself and plays more selfishly, then it'll be a tough for him.
The offense was perfect for him until Melo came back, so does the new coach know how to get all the pieces to work together, is the question.
I am hearing some chatter of a Phil Jackson return to NY. This could work in NY with Melo being the man, but I don't view him as being as good as Jordan or Kobe.
-LBOAYM
I did not hear that D'Antoni had wanted to trade Melo for Deron Williams. I thought he liked Lin as the point guard. I don't understand why there was no talk of trading Melo for Dwight Howard. If Howard wanted to go to Jersey, I would think that he would want to go to NY. Obviously there would have to be other players involved but the main guy that Jersey could have given to Orlando would have been Brook Lopez who is injury prone.
ReplyDeleteD'Antoni's offense is the pick and roll but since Melo came back they did not seem to run the pick and roll nearly as much as before. There was a lot more isolation plays with Melo. I think no matter what is said in public, Melo must have wanted the ball in isolation more. With Wilkerson now in charge he may get his wish. I agree that Lin should be more selfish and try to take it to the hoop and either try to score or kick out to Melo or Novack. But he is a second year guy so it is hard for him to take charge when there are super stars on the court. Remember, Steve Nash did not become an all star until his 7th season!
It would be interesting to see if Jackson takes over. If he can win with NY then he would get my vote as the greatest coach ever since he will not have someone like Kobe or Jordan. These guys are the ultimate competitors. I don't see Melo or Amare being anywhere near that. I am not sure Lebron is that either, even if Miami wins this year.
