Hey, the big election is over!  I am, of course, talking about the Canadian election.  Justin Trudeau, the son of the former prime minister Pierre, has led the liberal party to victory over conservative Steven Harper.  This ends the ten year reign of Harper.  I am not an expert in Canadian politics so I am hoping that anyone living near the Canadian border may have insight about this election.  Meanwhile, I have a few comments.

I remember that Trudeau's parents were compared to the Kennedys.  So this would be like John Jr. surviving and becoming president.  Pierre was 30 years older than Margaret.  She was obviously much better looking than him.  So I guess Justin must take after his mother since supposedly his good looks help him get elected.  So how much is looks and name have to do with this election or did the election simply turn on people's view of Harper?

Harper and Obama did not see eye to eye over things like Keystone, strategy in the Middle East and climate change.  So Obama is probably happy that Trudeau won even though he won't have much time to work with him.  While I can't say that Canadians and American voters are the same, I think they are similar.  So going for the more liberal agenda would please the Democrats.  For example, Harper had cut spending and Trudeau has promised to go into deficit to stimulate the economy.  But of course, the voters in Canada might just got tired of the Harper administration after ten years and want a change,  That would be bad omen for the Democrats.  So will see what happens next year.

I don't think it's a bad omen for the Democrats. Totally different situation in Canada, since Harper was the incumbent. It might have been bad if Obama were running again. Though Obama says he would have won again if he got to run again!

It would have been interesting if he had the opportunity to run again. I don't see anyone on the other side that would beat him. I still can't believe that Carson is the front runner next to Trump. Is this the GOP saying that they like black people?

This will be an interesting time in Canada. Kind of surprised that Harper lasted this long. There was a lot of rumbling about him the last couple of years. Though a lot of what I had heard was from liberals. So I'm sure it's more biased views.

It's no surprise that Obama and Harper didn't meet eye to eye on things. Oil is a huge deal for Canada and Harper wants to be able to sell it and distribute it for economic reasons.

  2. Unless things are doing extremely well in the economy,it is difficult for the same party to win 3 elections in a row. Next year may be different since the GOP is not offering any reasonable choices. Baring a scandal, I think Clinton will win.

I think Carson is beating Trump in Iowa because he seems more conservative than Trump. I don't think he will win in NH. Remember Herman Cain was doing well for a while last time. There is no chance that the GOP will nominate a black candidate.

What rumbling did you hear about Harper? Canada did better than most during the recession. Some of it was due to oil prices. Now the prices are going down and that has to affect Canada badly. But to get beat so badly by an inexperienced opposition, the voters must not like him much. Was it the economy, his aggressive stance in the middle east or his problem with a more diverse Canadian population?

I don't remember a whole lot of the controversy regarding Harper. I just remember that the people commenting were liberal, so they were biased against him. It seems to me that the conservative party was trying to block the way reporters worked or could cover the campaign. Limiting access to Harper. I had also heard of some rigging of elections previously or changing laws that would help their party.

I read a graphic on TV that Iowa has not chosen the eventual candidate since 2004. So Iowa has missed the last two elections. The candidates it picked were Santorum and Huckabee. Two of my least favorite politicians! So if Iowa picks Carson, he probably won't get the nomination.

I read that Cruz has picked up some money from the Perry supporters. If the Tea Party has the power in the party, then could we see him pick up the nomination?
