Went to see "Crazy Rich Asians" today. Maybe the last Asian American to have watched the movie? I am not a big fan of romantic comedies usually. But I really enjoyed the movie. I can see why it is given a 93 by Rotten Tomatoes. I guess that the all Asian cast was a plus. Although I wonder how come the father of the main guy was not featured in the movie? They can't find a 60 plus years old Asian man to be in the movie? I could certainly have filled the role of an old curmudgeon!
Trump used to like Bob Woodward. Or at least he said nice things about him. Not any more! I don't think Woodward's book nor the op-ed in the NYT make much difference in this time of polarization in the country. But it must seem appropriate that Woodward, who helped bring down Nixon, is at it again here!
Naomi Osaka's victory brings to forefront the notion of Japanese identity. As in many Asian nations, biracial kids are discriminated against in Japan. Changes have been coming but slowly. With Osaka's humility and calmness in victory (some Japanese call it the Japanese way), it may make changes in Japan and elsewhere come quicker.
I really enjoyed the movie. There were some things about it that I could relate to personally. Though I am definitely not rich (and hopefully crazy)! The exclusion of Nick's father was interesting. I think they wanted to show how isolated Nick's mom was. Sure she had it all, but she was raising the kids basically alone with the father gone all the time and she had to deal with his mother.
ReplyDeleteYou should volunteer for the sequel as the father! I hear there may be a dancing scene!
I tend to agree with Bob Woodward than with Trump. In fact, I can't believe that Trump came out this week and said that the death toll in PR was less than the reported amount. This reminded me of the Holocaust deniers. I'm sure we'll see better and faster recovery for people hit by Florence.
People like to put labels on others. It's easy to say Osaka is Japanese, but she's lived in the United States for 17 years and her father is from Haiti. I'm actually surprised she hasn't become a dual citizen. It is my understanding that Osaka only visits Japan on occasion to visit family and maybe when on tour. So yeah, maybe the Japanese people will embrace her as one of their own and it'll help with discrimination against biracial people.
I saw the list of celebrities for your favorite show, DWTS. I only know 2-3 people this time and no one on the list makes me want to root for anyone. I have yet to make a prediction, but will probably have to watch the first show to see who I think has a chance to win.

I don't know how much of Woodward's book are true. But almost anything that comes out Trump's mouth is either a lie or a boast of himself. From Obama's birth place, to how good Putin and Kim are, to the death toll of Puerto Rico, Trump has either been uninformed or outright lying. Don't forget how he talks about people who worked for him. They are great people until they turned on him. See what he said about Cohen and what he will say about Manafort, now that he has pledged to cooperate with Mueller.
ReplyDeleteOsaka was not great as a young junior player so was not supported by the USTA. Japan offered support so that is why she plays for Japan even though she grew up in Florida. This is like a lot of Mexican American soccer players in California, particularly the female players who choose to play for either country, depending on the level of support or chance of making the national teams. Osaka talks like an American teenager but with her bowing, she acts more Japanese.
I wonder how LBOAYM always knows who the contestants in DWTS are before everybody else? Since even he has no idea who are the favorite, I will wait until he gives his take and the names of the dancers before making my predictions!
