The backers of Trump are rejoicing today as the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Trump's travel ban. But while they are happy that Trump is tough on Muslims, they should be wondering why he is soft on Muslim dictators. I have mentioned how he said great things about the dictators in Saudi Arabia, the country where most of the 9/11 terrorists came from. He has also been admiring Erdogen, the president of Turkey who just won reelection this week. Just last week, Trump decided to sell the most sophisticated fight jets to Turkey. I think most people missed that news as the inhumane border trouble was going on. Erdogen has turned Turkey, which is a NATO member that was becoming a strong democracy, into a dictatorship. It is also turning more toward Russia. Most people do not think Turkey is a reliable ally any longer. Yet Trump goes ahead with the sale of the fighter jets. The news of that sale, while not important in the news cycle here, would be important in Turkey on the eve of the election. For now, this sale helps legitimize Erdogen. In the future, these jets may be used against American and Israel interests.

I'm not surprised by the SCOTUS decision today and also the other decisions this week. It is, after all, falling along party lines. To me, Turkey is a critical position as far as peace in the region goes. Though maybe it's not a bad idea to have a fellow dictator (oops) as an ally here. Seriously though, I'd like to see any stats if these bans are helping or not. I doubt I'll ever get true stats because I'd be bombarded by fake news by both sides.

I don't think any stat will show that this ban works. This is because none of the six countries being banned had terrorists attacking the U.S. before. So if nobody from these countries attack the U.S. during the ban, it doesn't prove anything. On the other hand if someone from say, Iran, attacked the U.S. during the ban, then critics like me can say that the ban backfired! Like I said, if you are going by stats to create the ban, then you should ban people from Saudi Arabia.
ReplyDeleteBy the way the two countries that are not Muslim majority on the banned list are Venezuela and North Korea. I don't think we have many people coming from North Korea in the first place. Will this anger Kim? Will he be banned from traveling to the White House when invited or will Trump violate his own travel ban?
