An article in the LA times yesterday got me angry. It was about a school district in Chula Vista, CA that served "alternate" lunches to kids whose parents were behind in their lunch payments. The kids were given cheese sandwiches instead of the usual burgers or pizzas that is on the main menu. They are also allowed to use the salad bar. This cut the yearly debt from $300,000 to $67,000. Of course the dead beat parents are complaining because it hurt their children's self-esteem. But of course if the parents had not stiff the school, the kids would not be stigmatized. Another case of people not taking their responsibilities but blaming others.

Of course I don't even think it is the role of the school to feed the kids. It is your kids, you should feed them! The poor kids get free breakfast and lunches at school. The other kids pay $1.50 which means the lunches are heavily subsidized. The schools are failing and yet society wants the schools to take on responsibilities that used to be those of the parents. Sex education used to be taught by parents but now the school teaches it. There is a call for medical clinics at the schools. They already have school nurses now. Pretty soon you won't have to keep the kid from school and take him to the doctor if he is sick. The doctor will be at school. How much longer do you think before they pass out condoms at school?

I'm trying to figure out which part of the article made you mad. Is it that school lunches are subsidized or that parents were complaining? Or neither.

I applaud the schools for giving the kids the cheese sandwiches. It's a pretty gutsy move these days. I wonder if there will be a lawsuit soon. I'm actually suprised there isn't one already considering the lawsuit craziness in California.

School lunches are fine. They should be a nice alternative for parents but they should not be a liability when it comes to money. How much does it cost to make a fake hamburger anyway?

What disturbs me most is that it seems to me that schools have become a type of babysitter for some families.

My ex-neighbor was a teacher in a poor neighborhood in Detroit. He said that everyday a lot of parents would ride up in their Cadillac Escalades and fancy rides and drop their kids off.

Most of these kids who were supposedly poor and instead of learning so that they could get out of the system, they would not try in school. And when the teachers would call the parents, the parents would not care. What a waste of tax dollars.

Again, it is a sign of society that somewhere raising children and basic moral values have changed.

Well, all this talk about sandwiches and salads has made me hungry. I think I'll go find some food.

  2. I am angry about the parents complaining. I realized subsidized lunches are a fact of life. I was merely pointing out that at $1.50 it is a great deal. I think it was about 75 cents to 1 dollar when I went to junior high and that was almost 40 years ago. So to double in 40 years means it is much more heavily subsidized than before. Yet people still stiff the school. I think there is no lawsuit because the sandwiches with the salad bar satifies the nutritional requirement of the federal government. In reality it is probably better for you than a humburger. So there is no disparity nutritional wise. Also since most of the kids getting free lunches in California are minorities this means that most of the deadbeats are white, they can't complain it is discriminating against the minorities by giving them a different meal!

I understand what your neighbor meant. I have a lot of patients on medicaid and yet if you check out my parking lot you will see lots of SUVs. Most of the cars are better than the one I drive. All of this speaks of the values in our society.
