Saw some of the highlights of the inaugural speech and pagentries of the day.  It was a nice speech and some of the music were great.  But I don't think we need to spend all that money to have an inaugural when it is the same president.   I think the inaugural is a great reminder of our democracy working smoothly when there is change of power from one president to another.  In many countries of the world this is not a given.  But when there is no change in power, I think we should skip all the ceremonies.  This will save a good chunk of money.  Even when there are corporate sponsorships of many of the events, it is not a good idea.  We do not need anyone getting more influence on the president with contributions to a inaugural ball.

So it is on to the Harbaugh Bowl.  This could have been the U-M quarterback Bowl.  But unfortunately it is not to be.  I will have to conceit defeat to LBOAYM.  Now about that conspiracy theory....

I didn't get a chance to see much of the inauguration but I heard that it fit with the MLK celebration. Most of my Republican friends were disappointed by it because he did not offer up anything regarding the economy.

My view is that the inauguration speech is not for that kind of stuff. That's what the State of the Union address is for.

I tend to side with you regarding a second inaugural, though I don't know if you can eliminate it. It's one of those things that shows the world that there is support for the President and that we are still a great country.

Just like how the Queen had her jubilee, it's all money spent. But I would think that it's also a boost in the economy with all those people travelling and staying in Washington DC hotels.

And since the inauguration is done mostly by donations, I guess I'm OK with it. Maybe I would just like to see it scaled down.

I wanted to ask you if you thought that Michelle Obama would ever run for office at some point. I can see her take the Hillary route and start out as a senator and work her way up.

I really thought that New England was going to win, but I just didn't want to agree with you, for a change. In fact, I had picked New England in a pool I am in.

I should have switched to Baltimore because I found myself conflicted on who to root for on Sunday. Do I go root for the money or for pride in beating you?

As far as the big game goes, we get two very similar teams going at it. I think SF has an edge in defense and in QB. This will be interesting. You know my heart is with SF, so I will say they will win.

  2. I agree with you on the different roles of the inaugural speech and the state of the union address. I don't think that Michelle Obama will be a candidate like Hilary did right after the years in the White House. Hilary was more political as a First Lady as demonstrated in her role in the attempt to reform health care. She also benefited from two things which I don't think Michelle will have. One is that Bill was very popular when he left office. I doubt that Obama will be that popular. Hilary was also a sympathetic figure having endured the Lewinsky affair. Those two factors made it easier to win.

Speaking of Michelle Obama, there was more about her gown on CNN than the inaugural speech last night. Jason Wu is probably better known in the U.S. than the new president of China. And that is with the CNN audience!

Good win for MSU tonight. I watched the last few minutes of the game and I can tell it must have been an ugly one. Wisconsin had broke serve against Indiana but now lose its advantage by losing to MSU at home. If MSU can win at Indiana they will be in the driver's seat in the early going.

I remember early on Obama's first campaign that it seemed that Michelle Obama was very political. She has changed her image a lot by being first lady.

I also remember seeing a poll where her approval rating was sky high. If she has any aspirations, I would think that she will run for a congress seat when Obama leaves office.

It'll be interesting to see if she has those aspirations. Just a thought.

I heard that Jason Wu's dresses or designs are banned in Taiwan (or is it China) because of the style. I don't really know the whole story, but she must really like him to have used him again.

The MSU/Wisconsin game was a typical MSU/Wisconsin slugfest. They are ugly games with no scoring for minutes. MSU gets no style points, but they do get the W's, which is all that matters. They are winning ugly and you have to wonder if they can keep doing it.

Indiana will be very hard to beat on the road, but there have been so many weird things this year. I guess that's why they play the games!

  4. Well, Michelle Obama has been doing good, nonpolitical work for 4 years. So her ratings are going to be high. Jimmy Carter's rating is also very high, way better than when he was president. Having said that, obviously if Michelle were to run for office from Illinois, she would easily win. I think that will be unlikely until her younger daughter is in college at least. So who knows what will happen in 8 to 10 years.

Speaking of high poll numbers, Hilary's numbers are very high even with the Bengahzi tragedy and hearing. I only saw a little of the hearing highlights but I don't think it would hurt her.

Indiana will be tough but Miami beat Duke by almost 30 today. So you are right, there is a lot of weird things this year.

  5. Michigan is going to be number one! Of course there is a tournament at the end to decide the champion, not the BCS. In fact with road games at Indiana, Wisconsin and MSU' coming up, I will predict that this number one ranking will not last two weeks.

Will be interesting how UM plays with the target on their backs. They've been pretty impressive this season and playing with confidence. I don't know what the schedule is, but I am assuming the game in Bloomington will determine the Big Ten champion. I think that the top 3 teams are UM, Indiana, MSU, right now. Minnesota has hit a wall and is not playing very well. Though I think they aren't far behind.

What is your Super Bowl prediction?

I am really tempted to pick Baltimore, even though I was picking SF this whole time. I guess I will have to stick to my choice though. SF 27 Balt. 24.

Will the brother hug after the game or just shake hands or not greet each other?

Oops, forgot to mention OSU. I think they are tied with MSU as the 3rd best team in the Big Ten right now.

  8. I am taking SF but given my poor prediction in this playoff so far, it may be the kiss of death for them.

It is a long way to go in the Big Ten. Also in the NCAA. A lot of teams are in contention for the national title as well. OSU should be right up there since they did beat Michigan although I think M will return the favor at home next week. OSU is playing Wisconsin tomorrow. Wisconsin wins and loses ugly. Will see what happens.
