Saw the Oscar show last night at a party.  Usually I don't watch the whole show, maybe the opening when Billy Crystal is hosting.  But since this was an Oscar viewing party, I watched the whole thing.  I thought that Seth MacFarlane did a very good job.  I think he was certainly way better than Ann Hathway and James France were a couple of years ago.  I think only Crystal has been better among the recent hosts.  But for some reason the reviews were mixed.  It seems that MacFarlane offended some people. I don't see it.  I thought he was funny and his singing and dancing were pretty good.  I think the best performer was Shirley Bassey of James Bond fame.  She must be near 80 years old but she looks much younger and her voice is still tremendous!  I finished an amazing 2nd place among the party guests in predicting the winners.  This is amazing because I have only watched one of the movies nominated!  Unfortunately, first place went to my wife who had only watched the same movie I did!

It appears that no deal will be made before March 1st and the sequestration will occur.  As I said before, let it happen.  Both sides think that it will be to their advantage, so neither side is going to compromise.  So let's see who blinks first.  I don't think that the cuts will mean poor people dying in the streets or our national defense become number two in the world.  The stock market will fall for a while and the economic growth will slow down.  But I don't think those two things will last long.  We will not go back to a recession as a result of this.

Good to see you posting again. I thought something happened to you or if your iPad stopped working!

You know, you've officially hit the West Coast elitist list, when you attend a Oscars party! I have heard of people holding these but have never been invited to one.

I am not sure how I feel about being invited to one. Though, I have a feeling that most of my friends would not host one! However, I think these parties are more popular on the West Coast, since the time difference helps.

I was barely awake when the show ended and most years, I am asleep by the time it ends. I thought it was a good show. I was more interested this year because it seemed that there were strong nominees this year in the main categories.

Very happy to see Ang Lee win. You are right about Shirley Bassey. I didn't even realize she was still alive!

It was good to see Barbra Streisand too, though I thought the list of people they did was short (maybe to fit in Babs' song?).

Still not sure how Affleck did not get a director nominee, though I am not sure if he would have won anyway.

I really like Argo and will probably see Silver Linings soon. I heard that Amour was really good but depressing. I will also rent Life of Pi soon too.

Will be interesting what happens with the sequestration. A lot of mixed opinions, and I'm not sure if it's all political or what.

Found out about the cast on DWTS, a show that I don't watch!

But since I know that you watch it, I will make my early prediction that Aly Raisman will win. My dark horse is Ingo Rademacher, who is a famous soap opera star.

I think Jacoby Jones and Victor Ortiz will do well too, but I think boxers have problems with posture and I don't know if Jones will show the effort.

  2. The people who watch the Oscars are on the average in their mid fifties. So I am in the right age group to attend such a party. When you get to my age perhaps you and your friends will be having an Oscar party as well. You are right about the time difference. The show was over at 9 here but midnight over there. Us old people would never stay up that late to watch anything.

Silver Lining was the only nominated movie I saw. It was very good and I liked all the actors" performances. But I did pick Argo to win because I figured there would be a backlash due to the snubbing of Affleck. I picked Spielberg to win because I didn't want to be the Chinese guy picking a Chinese guy. My wife picked Ang Lee and that was the difference between first and second place! Such an ethnocentric person!

I think I would rather admit of watching DWTS than admitting that I know Ingo Rademacher is a "famous" soap opera star! Where do you come up with such info?

Oh no! Don't mistake my knowing who Ingo Rade(whatever his name is) for actually knowing who he is. I looked up all the bios for the contestants! Yeah, that's my story and I am sticking with it.

I highly recommend Argo. It was one of my favorite movies this past year. I also liked Lincoln, but I was tricked, since it was NOT a movie about the car company.

One question I did have for you. Is Jennifer Lawrence's performance that good in Silver Linings?

From all the clips, I really thought the lady from Amour did an outstanding job.

  4. Hmm, you do not watch DWTS but do check on the bios of all the contestants. It sounds suspicious. I think you either watch DWTS all the time or watch soap operas at work on your computer. If you do like dancing, start now and by the time you get to my age you can be the top Chinese male dancer in your studio, just like I am today.

Jennifer Lawrence was very good but I can't say how that compares with the other nominees since I have not seen those movies. I also have not seen the Hunger Games. A critic said recently that her performance was better in the Hunger Games but that those kind of movies are ignored by the Academy. My wife thought that Robert DeNiro was like me in the movie: playing a superstitious sports fan.

What is the forecast for the Tigers this year? Torii Hunter had a good season in Anaheim last year but he is getting old and I am not sure he has enough power to play at Comerica Park. Is Victor Martinez back? He would be a big plus if he comes all the way back.

There are high expectations for the Tigers this year. Torri Hunter seems to be a great clubhouse addition. It will be interesting to see if he can produce at the high level we've seen in the past. Shows that baseball is a good sport to be good at and have longevity.

Victor Martinez is back as well. He's hitting pretty good this spring. Like Hunter, it will be interesting to see if he can pick up where he left off before getting hurt.

If those two play at a high level, then it will help Cabrerra and Fielder. Starting pitching seems to be a strong spot too, but the bullpen is unknown. I am not a big Phil Coke fan, but he proved me wrong in the playoffs. Can he continue pitching well?

They might be relying on a kid to close, who did not pitch in the big leagues last year. He was in the minors being groomed for the role. I can't remember his name, though. I am skeptical.
