Had no power in the house for 41 hours, starting 5 am on Tuesday to 10 pm on Wednesday. So missed all of the inauguration. Seems that nothing bad happened, so that was good. If we had violence then our democracy maybe questioned. Now the world see that we still have peaceful transfer of power. We can still be the leader of democracy in the world. If anyone has comment or insight on the inauguration, please write in, as I saw nothing live.
Now comes the hard part for Biden and Harris: how to govern such a divided country. There is one advantage for Biden. Like when Obama started in 2009, things can't really get much worse. The financial situation was bound to go up for Obama and the Covid-19 situation is bound to get better for Biden. But in both cases, almost half of the country is against them and rooting for them to fail. McConnel said that he wanted to make Obama a one term president from day one. He has not said that about Biden but he is sure strategizing it.
Biden started right away to reverse some of the executive orders by Trump. While I agree most of these changes, it is a problem if every 4 years we change the goals of the country. If we keep changing courses every four years, lots of money and energy will be wasted and we are still back to square one. What Biden and whoever follows him will need to convince the public is what our long term goals will be. For that to happen we need bipartisanship. I am all for getting rid of the extreme right wing politics of Trump. But I don't want the extreme left to dominate the next four years either. We should try to work on things that we obviously agree with. Like improving our infrastructure. I think we can all agree that we should not have power outage for 41 hours when there is no hurricane, tornado or earthquake!
Was this one of those planned power outages or did something happen? If it was planned, at least you could prepare but losing power that long is very tough to handle. You can't keep food very long.
ReplyDeleteI can't argue much of what you wrote regarding Biden and the road ahead. I do hope that things simmer down and the country is not as divided. But it'll be hard. The one thing as I always say is that if the economy is good then it might help things.
I do think we are on an upswing in the economy for the next year unless something unforeseen happens. The question is if can be maintained.
One of the people in the HR department at my work declared that she was a Trump supporter today. I was a little taken back by that since the election was over and usually politics shouldn't be talked about at work...especially for a person in HR. I kept my mouth shut because you can't talk to these people. There is no debating because they are blind to him. The only thing she said negatively is that he should have been off Twitter. She said he did a lot of great things for America. I wanted to ask her what those things were but didn't. I'm assuming it would have been the ban on immigrants and building the wall and making America first!
I was a little surprised that Biden reversed so many items early. There are some hot issues like the ban on Muslims and the wall. I wonder how much of the wall is done. I am still waiting for Mexico to send money for it!

This is the second time that we had power shut off for over 40 hours. Edison had been sued several times in recent years as down power lines caused fires in California. So to decrease their liability they decided to shut off power when there is very windy conditions. This is no solution as there are numerous days of winds over 40 miles per hour which seems to be the level that they shut off power the last two times. While 40 mile winds are not good, that is not like a hurricane, tornado or a typhoon. A neighbor of ours, probably a Republican, said that there was money for infrastructure improvement which would have mitigated this problem but the "green initiative" mandated by Sacramento made Edison used the money for infrastructure to comply with the initiative. I don't know if that is true but I feel like we are living in a third world country with all these outages.
ReplyDeleteI wish that you would have asked your co-worker what great thing Trump did for America? Did your company improved its bottom line in the last 4 years? Like you said, Mexico has not paid for the wall and the wall isn't built as he promised. Trade deficit with China is worse since the trade war. He has made America first: in COVID cases and deaths. Did the tax break help her? It was Paul Ryan's doing. So he banned Mexicans and Muslims from coming. We all feel a lot safer now that only white guys are storming capitols throughout the country with automatic weapons.
I agree there is not much point to debating these people. But I think we should not stay silent any longer. If I lose a few of these "friends" along the way, so be it.
