Spencer Stone, the hero who took down the terrorist on the Belgium train, was stabbed outside a bar in Sacramento last week.   Maybe I am old but it seems to me nothing good comes being inside or outside a bar at 1 am.  In any case, the police are looking for two Asian men who apparently stabbed Stone.  The whole story is not out yet, but regardless there is no good reason for anyone to pull a weapon on someone else.  Just like there was no excuse for those guys who used a bat to kill Vincent Chin years ago, there is no excuse for these guys to stab Stone.

Of course, if those guys had a gun instead of a knife, Stone would probably be dead.  If this occurred in Florida or Texas. then these guys would plead self defense since Stone is a big and strong dude and would probably prevailed in a fight against them.  I wonder what the gun lobby and those who like the "self defense, no stand down laws" would say then?

I think knowing they have a weapon probably make it more likely that these guys would fight Stone.  It is just like Zimmerman would never approach Martin if he did not have a gun.  These laws are so stupid that if a little guy wants to kill a big guy, all he had to do was get into a fight with him.  Then he can claim self defense and shoot the bigger guy since it is obvious that he is in danger given the size difference.  Of course, without a weapon, the weaker guy would never instigate a fight in the first place!

Well, you are correct about nothing good happens when you are outside a bar at 1am. I haven't heard that Stone was actually at the bar or had been at the bar. The bad thing is that he was out and had the altercation. I am assuming from what I read, that a group (maybe it was a gang?) started that altercation, when they hit a woman and Stone was defending her. I am not clear if she was with Stone or happened to be in the same area.

Either way, who ever did the stabbing, should be punished. To me, anytime you pull out a weapon, there is intent to kill or at the very least, intent to harm.

The difference with the Chin incident was that the murder of Chin was premeditated. The guys sought out Chin and killed him. Plus it was not random.

The Stone attack looks to be random, because they were all outside and probably walking around. It doesn't look like his attacker knew who he was. Though the motive is still unknown. I hope it wasn't because he was white.

Good point on the gun part. We don't hear much about the police killings from pro-gun groups. It's an interesting dynamic. Near Detroit last week, a gun owner shot at these guys she saw robbing a Home Depot as the suspects were driving away. She supposedly shot one of the tires and had a description of the vehicle.

I'm not sure I want someone doing that. Though sometimes people like that are considered heroes. They did catch the suspects in Flint but have not filed charges against the shooter.

  2. From what I read, which is not necessary the truth, Stone saw one of the guys hitting a woman and he intervened. After he was stab, the woman left with the two men. So that sounds like no good deed goes unpunished. Also, Stone should realize that it is more dangerous in the U.S. than in some war zones now given all the weapons people carry here.

I was only comparing the use of weapons in Chin's case and here. Obviously the Chin killers ambushed Chin and so was much worse than the Stone case. Which brings up another point: if the judge in the Chin case would have presided over this case, would he have let the two Asian guys go free? If not, then the judge would have to be obviously a racist.

If they let that gun owner go free, then we are all going to be Charles Bronson and Dexter Morgan and be the judge, jury and executioner against everyone who we think have committed a crime. Dodge city would have been safer.
