Tomorrow is the first debate.  It will be on about the same time as DWTS.  There are some similarity between the two.  First neither candidate are stars just like DWTS contestants are mostly has beens or never weres.  Also the better dancer doesn't always get more votes.  In this case, Clinton will be better versed in policies and has more experience like the better technical dancer.  Trump will, however, be a better showman.  So will he get more votes than the better technician?  But this election is about the less of two evils.  So in terms of DWTS it will be like Rick Perry vs Tom Delay.  It maybe difficult to stomach.

I have no idea if I'll watch either one. I got my DirecTV back on so now I am able to watch ABC. I think DWTS is on before the debate here, though I think I'll be watching football. A better comparison might be WWE Raw which is also on. Both the debate and pro wrestling will have fake drama and outrageous characters.

As I said before, I don't think these debates do anything to sway voters. I think people have their minds made up by now. It's too bad the 2 other candidates aren't debating, since I think they're both taking votes from the front runners. I'd like to expose them as real candidates or frauds. I've seen a few Johnson signs around here lately. I don't know if people are voting for him just because he's not Trump or Clinton or if they believe in what he stands for.

I am leaning toward the former on that. I don't know if I could vote for a Libertarian, even though I would love to not pay taxes. There's a reason why both Pauls have never had any traction in getting enough support for president.

  2. I watched to debate in its entirety! I thought Clinton won by a landslide. Trump was good in the beginning, behaving well and was able to attack Clinton on trades. His usual blaming of foreign trades for hurting American workers was putting Clinton on the defensive. I thought she should have pointed out that for all of Trump's talk of helping American workers, his company made shirts, ties and other things in foreign countries. Clinton missed that opportunity and so Trump was leading.

But then Trump became a bully again, kept interrupting Clinton when it was her turn to speak. He made a mess of things in answering about his taxes, Obama's birth place and Iraq. He went off tangent. He did not look presidential at all. Clinton, on the other hand, took his bullying without getting angry and was calm and collected while making her attacks. I think it was a decisive Clinton win.

Having said that, I wonder if it makes any difference. I thought Trump was a bully during the primary debates and did not look presidential. Yet he won the nomination. The question is: will his style work in the general election. We will have to see but it seems like except for the first 20 minutes, Trump did not change his style from the primary debates.

If I ever meet the person who invented the DVR, I would thank him/her. I was able to watch the football game and debate last night along with DWTS. DWTS was actually pretty nice because they had to hurry through the show so there wasn't as much fluff and talking. The gymnast is still my favorite. I thought Calvin Johnson was good, but not in the same league. I was pleasantly surprised at how good Marilu Henner was. Funny that Marsha Brady was having problems with her body, but Henner didn't say anything at all. She must be in very good shape.

The debate was what I thought it would be. You can't score this like a normal debate because it really didn't become one. Trump was Trump. He talks in vague terms but does a great job of creating this picture of Clinton as an insider who can't get anything done. I thought some of his answers to her accusations were decent enough to make his supporters think he didn't do anything wrong.

I thought Clinton did a decent job, though I was disappointed that, like you, didn't go after Trump as far as his clothes being manufactured in China and his bankruptcies. She also failed to single out that he didn't pay his taxes. He left that open and she backed away for some reason. I have a tendency to think that she was too prepared and doesn't do well in ad lib moments.

I was disappointed that Trump did not go after Clinton regarding the emails and Benghazi enough. And he really spent too much time on trade. Maybe he was doing it because he's trying to get the labor vote.

He did have a couple of good sound bites. The one about releasing his taxes if she releases the emails was good, though anyone who is unbiased can figure out that since they are deleted, it'll never happen. So, it's an empty promise.

Clinton again did not defend herself regarding the emails. I'm not sure why her team didn't prep her better on that. The only thing she said was that it was a mistake, but if she's going to play ball with Trump, she could come up with better excuses.

Clinton's best soundbite had to be the one about her stamina. I thought it was quite good.

As I said before, I don't think the debate will do anything since I think people are decided on their candidates. I don't know if it helped with undecideds at all either. I have a friend who is voting for Gary Johnson, but I have a feeling he's only doing it to not vote for the other two.

  4. Trump was at his best in the beginning when he talked about trade. Even though he is wrong on the issue, it is difficult for Clinton or anyone else to make it clear that global trade is a net plus in the end. Trump mentioned Michigan and Ohio several times in obvious attempt to get the labor votes in those states.

I disagree about Clinton did not hit Trump on taxes. She did say that Trump probably does not pay income tax. Trump stumble when he says that he is smart and that the tax would be squandered anyway. This seems to indicate that he admits he does not pay income tax and that is why he is not releasing his return. He tried to change the subject to her e-mails. Clinton did not try to defend herself here because she has tried in the past and it never worked. So she just admit mistake and take responsibility. Of course that is meaningless but it worked last night because Trump had no follow up attack and the subject was pretty much close. Then Clinton attacked Trump for not paying people who worked for him and Trump just said that he wasn't satisfy with the work and thus admitting that he did not pay up. So it looks to me Clinton was well prepared and Trump was not. It can be said that she is not authentic with all the preparation of a typical politician. But even here she had a response: sure she prepared but she was also preparing to be president.

I think the consensus is that Clinton won but like I said it may not matter. Even in normal election debate four years ago when Romney won over Obama in the first debate, it did not lead Romney to victory. But Obama had a bad day and rebounded to wins over the next two debates. Can Trump change his style and substance? Maybe it would not matter how he had defied expectation so far. But I think Clinton has to be pleased with what happened last night.

I can see why people may want to vote for a third party candidate this year. But Stein is even more extreme than Bernie Sanders. Libertarians sound reasonable when they are talking from the outside and they would probably do a good job of governing rural Idaho or somewhere like that. But I don't think they understand the world outside the U.S. Just look at how Johnson did not know what is Aleppo.

I am glad that you can catch up with your favorite show. I like the format last night as well although it seems that they match up people with equal talents. So for example either Rick Perry or Vanilla Ice is going to get immunity even though they are the worst of the ones left.

I seems like the Tigers are in big trouble of not making the playoffs. I think they could have used Porcello, Scherzer and one other pitcher whose name escape me right now. How did Porcello win so many games? He is still young, how did they lose him?

I think you may have misunderstood me when I talked about Clinton not hitting Trump on taxes. I agree she did and it exposed Trump as a shrewd businessman who looks out for only himself and his business. The point I wanted to make is that she had him on the ropes at that point and didn't go for the knockout or at least capitalize on it. All she had to do is follow up with a "So Donald, you admit that you don't pay taxes." It would have made him try to defend himself and she could then follow up with a "This is why we need to tax the wealthiest Americans, because they don't pay their fair share. And this is why Trumped Up Trickle Down has never worked and never will."

So, there were a few times that she could have done this, but I think she is too rehearsed to go ad lib. I think her husband would have done it. Reagan would have done it. But then again, we're talking about the two best orators the office has ever seen.

I really think that Trump was about to mention Bill Clinton's affairs but held back. I hope that his advisers have told him not to do it in a debate setting. The problem with doing that is that Clinton can counter that Trump himself cheated on his first wife and as a woman, knows what it's like to be cheated on. This would only help her in this case. It's a different story if Trump tweets it or does it when she can't respond right away.

So, the only things he can attack her on is foreign policy and trade and maybe her emails. I really don't think her emails will sway any independent voters. The other two things he can try to hit on but it's an uphill battle.

I am really surprised that the Clinton campaign isn't hinting more of the Russian connection and the recent cyber attacks, trying to link Russia to them and indirectly or directly linking Russia to Trump. I think there's something there they can capitalize on, even if there's only a remote chance these are all related. Heck, if Trump brings up the emails again, Clinton can ask Trump "Why don't you ask your friends in Russia to see if they can find them?".

I also understand that people want an alternate candidate. But what I don't understand is that people don't look at what these candidates stand for. I doubt that half of the people considering Stein or Johnson would even agree on their platforms. It's a wasted vote.

Agree with the pairings on DWTS. I felt bad for the little person, who did really well on her dance couldn't advance. Again, thanks to the person who invented the DVR because I got to speed through about 80% of the show last night. I don't really care for the fluff and side performances, so it worked out. I actually thought Rick Perry was a great personality. I may like him as a politician, but he seems like a great guy to hang out with.

It's been an up and down year for the Tigers. They look great some games and horrible in others. I predict that they will tie for the 2nd wildcard spot and lose in a play-in game or something like that.

I said earlier in the year (or was it last year?) that they should have tried to get Porcello back when he was struggling. I'm a little surprised since he needs a big ball park to be effective. Once again, Dombrowski shows he knows what he's doing. He got a lot of criticism here but he's put together a good team in Boston.

To answer your question on Porcello, I think they traded him to Boston for Iglesias. I might be wrong, but I think that's what happened. Maybe Dombroski knew he was going to get fired and would go to Boston!

  6. I see what you are getting at with the tax return. But I think Clinton got as much out of that exchange as she could have. I mean, everybody knows about Trump's tax problem, the birther issue and calling women names. Everybody also knows about Clinton's email and Benghazi problems. There is only so much either one can attack the other on these issues before people are turned off by it. Clinton walked a good balance of attacking Trump on his problems and also put out some policy statements. But Trump just attacked Clinton without putting out anything specific. And he didn't get far with the email and nothing on Benghazi. So overall I think Clinton came out well.

I agree that Trump couldn't talk about Bill's affairs since he also had committed adultery. But he got so irritated by the Miss Universe accusation that he almost went with the attack on Bill. I don't think the Miss Universe thing would be bad for Trump since he has said bad things about McCain, a disabled vet, Gold Star parents etc without losing much ground. So this thing with calling a beauty queen bad names is not going to hurt him. But typical Trump even that got under his skin. So that shows what temperament he has!

It just came to me: the third pitcher was Doug Fister. He, Porcello and Scherzer were all entering their prime when the Tigers let them go. What a rotation they would have today if they didn't leave. I can understand that Scherzer was asking too much but I wonder about the other two, especially given the bad season Sanchez is having.

Looks like the Trump campaign is really going after the union vote or rust belt vote. He's in Novi on Friday. Interestingly, the Detroit News endorsed Johnson today. I have no idea if newspaper endorsements mean anything these days, especially this election. And as you know, this has been such a strange election because Johnson supporters are pulling votes away from Clinton and not Trump. I wonder if the endorsement will sway conservatives to vote for Johnson instead. I have my doubts.

It's possible that Trump was not expecting the Miss Universe attack. He seemed to be prepared for most of the attacks, but was shocked by this one. I wonder if he'll be more prepared on the next debate. Clinton can't get cocky and I particularly like her gloating about the debate. I'm not sure if that's a good strategy for her campaign.

Tigers had a great rotation. But I think there were some needs and decided to go another way. Don't forget that they signed David Price to a huge contract as well.

I leave you with this funny article from Newsweek. Obviously Trump is not Andy Kaufman, but I always enjoy reading conspiracy theories.

  8. I have some friends in Novi who are white collar people who will not vote for Trump so I think if he wants blue collar worker votes he should go to Wyandotte, Taylor, Romulus areas. One place he won't go is Dearborn. Speaking of Dearborn, it was featured in last night's episode of Designated Survivor. It is a pretty good show starring Jack Bauer, I mean Kiefer Sutherland, as POTIUS. Actually it would be good if Bauer became president. Then he can go after the bad guys without getting orders.

The Detroit News is crazy. After the Aleppo debacle, Johnson choked again, not able to name just one world leader he admires. Just one person, and he couldn't come up with it. It shows how shallow our politicians are. He is the Sarah Pain of 2016 and he gets 8-9% in the polls and an endorsement from a major newspaper? He is pulling more independents from Clinton than Trump but I don't think it is that much difference. But even if it is 2 % more from Clinton than Trump and you add the 2% Stein pulls which is all from Clinton and you have a 4% loss for Clinton. So it is really up to Obama and Sanders to bring out as much as possible the young voters and black voters in order to compensate for these losses.

I was not a big fan of Kaufman so I really don't get this conspiracy theory. All I know is that if Trump gets elected, the joke is on us and it won't be funny.

Trump has been in Michigan a lot, so his people must think there are votes up for grabs. I keep hearing that some union workers are going against leadership and voting for Trump. I don't think the location of where he goes is part of a strategy. Though I don't think he's been out in western Oakland county yet. I think he's just looking for large venues to speak at. Today, he is at a large convention center. The Michigan State Fair is held there now and is decently accessible by all freeways.

I missed the first episode of Designated Survivor due to not having ABC. Since I restarted my DirecTV, I have that show programmed to record but I'm starting in episode 2. I have seen some highlights and it seems to me that he speaks like Jack Bauer in that low whisper voice. It'll be hard for me to not think of him as Bauer, but we will see.

By the way, did you end up watching any of "The Night Of"?

I was never a big fan of Kaufman until about 10 years ago when I finally started getting his humor even though some of it still makes me cringe. There are theories that he faked his death because he had talked about doing it. So his fans have kept him "alive" with a lot of conspiracies. Kind of like Elvis sightings, the fans think that he will reappear like at a certain anniversary of his death or something like that. Like I said, I like to read about conspiracies, but don't hold much truth to them. One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes was the Keith Hernandez spitting conspiracy!

    Did you see this?
