It was pointed out by senator Durbin that Chloe Kim's parents would not have been allowed to immigrate to the U.S. under Trump's immigration rules.  While this is politicizing a great moment in U.S. Olympic history, Durbin is right.  In fact, my family would not have been able to come to the U.S. under Trump's rules.  He wants to get rid of family sponsorship.  My family came due to my aunt and uncle sponsoring us.  He wants immigrants who are educated and speak English.  My parents did not meet these requirements.  Obviously we are not from Norway.  But like the Kims, our parents have made a good life in the U.S. and I think my siblings and I have been useful citizens for this country.  Like the Kims, we have lived the American dream which would not be possible if Trump had his way.

Another school shooting today.  I have run out of words to say except for praying for the victims and their families.  The GOP will say again that it is not the time to discuss guns.  They are right.   The time for the discussion should have taken place many years ago.

Happy lunar new year, everybody.  May it be a peaceful and prosperous year.

Interesting take on the immigration issue by you. Most of the talk has centered around DACA, but we've seen that there's a possibility that good immigrants = white, rich immigrants, according to this administration. Though they will gladly take Chinese money, when it means money in their pockets. If you think about it, Chinese immigrants were lucky to come to this country.

You seem to know your history better than I do. I don't know how it happened, since up until the 60's Chinese men could not bring their families and they were not allowed to marry outside of their race. So were relations improved at some point? Was it the Nixon visit or previous to that?

Happy New Year to you and your family!

  2. The Chinese were allowed to immigrate legally after the Magnuson Act of 1943 repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act. But immigration policies dictated that quotas reflect the ethnicity of the country. So since Europeans were the majority of the country, they also got more spots to immigrate. So it was extremely difficult for Chinese to come legally till 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was passed. This was better known as the Hart-Celler Act. The Hart in this case was Philip Hart, senator from Michigan. This act made it possible to bring family members to the U.S. by any citizen without regard to the country of origin quotas. This is how my aunt and uncle were able to sponsor our family. Since we ended up in Detroit, it is karma that Philip Hart was instrumental for our coming!

    Happy new year!
