A few rants today.  First there is Senator Cruz from Texas.  I will give him credit for standing up there talking away for over 21 hours without eating or bath room breaks.  I cannot go 21 MINUTES without going to the bathroom.  So I must tip my hat to him.  I think all filibusters should be done this way, not by the minority party simply saying that they would filibuster so unless the majority can get 60 votes then the law does not pass.  I think anyone who wants to filibuster should go up there and talk until he or she can't do it anymore.  Having applauded Cruz for his effort, I must say it was a waste of time.  At the end he voted with everybody so the vote was 100 to 0.  If he was doing this as a symbolic gesture, shouldn't he voted the way he wanted the vote to go in the first place?

Bud Selig is retiring.  Well overdue.  He has not been an effective commissioner, presiding over the steroid era.  A tie All Star game and the All Star game determining the home field advantage in the World Series occured under his watch.  I always wonder how is it that an owner of a team become the commissioner.  Shouldn't they have hired someone who was neutral?  Also the announcement came today but he is not retiring till Jan. of 2015, more than a year away.  Is he expecting a goodbye tour a la Mariano Rivera next year?

The U.S. wins the America's Cup.  Big deal.  It is an ultra rich man's sport.  Larry Ellison spends millions to win a cup nobody except a few billionaires care about.  This year's racing included cheating and a death.  It is like throwing money into water for no reason.  I know it is their money and they can do whatever they want to do with it.  But I will always think more highly of people like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates for donating their money than people like Ellison who just want to play with toys.

Not much time to respond to your blog this week.

The filibuster was of course, political grand standing of course. It was probably a waste of time, but I guess Cruz drew the short straw and had to be the face of the GOP on this one. I understand the reason why it was done, but in the end, nothing changed. It's hard to effect change, when you don't have an alternative solution.

I am not a big Bud Selig fan. I am glad he is retiring. Just wish it was at the end of this year. The baseball re-allignment was screwed up and smelled of corruption. Will never know why Milwaukee (cough, cough) is still in the NL while Houston is in the AL.

Didn't watch any of the America's Cup (AC). I heard it was a great comeback for the American team, which I also heard, is captained by a non-American.

I am sure the beauty and excellent engineering of these boats is impressive. I don't really care. Rich guys playing with their rich toys.

  2. Cruz wanted to do this because he wants to run for president. But even Rand Paul thinks he is wasting his time. Incidentally he read Dr. Seuss during his filibuster. But wasn't Dr. Seuss a liberal?

I had never heard of Cruz before last week. I wonder what kind of following he has. Maybe he read Dr. Seuss because he wanted everyone to make Seuss sound silly. This whole threat to shut down the government is dumb. I would love it, if the politicians lost money when ever they do something like this. Instead, they end up hurting innocent government workers.

It'll end up costing taxpayers more and putting a drag on the economy if the shut down occurs. Maybe that's the strategy at this point and then pin it on Obama.

I find it funny and upsetting that politicians would rather do this than make thing better. And in the end, Obamacare will still end up happening.

On a side note, I thought for sure you'd have a Breaking Bad wrap up here. What are your thoughts of the finale?

  4. Ted Cruz is the Texas version of Rubio. Both are Cuban Americans with Tea Party backing. One of them will drop out and then battle Rand Paul for the conservative backing to go against a moderate, maybe Christie.

So looks like the GOP is taking the plunge and shut down the government. Well it was either now or when the debt ceiling limit comes up later this month. You know if the GOP really thinks that Obamacare is so terrible, they should let it go into play. This way if it fails miserably it will be a bad legacy for Obama and increase the chance for GOP to win back the White House next time. So maybe they are afraid that people will actually like it just as people were skeptical about Medicare but now if anyone wants to dissolve Medicare, he will not get elected for sure.

Breaking Bad finale was great. I thought it tied things together nicely. When Walter finally admits he liked doing what he did, it got me thinking. It must be like the politicians who may have gone into it to do something good for the country. But once you start making deals with the devil, you are just kidding yourself about doing it for the country. What you are doing is for you own ego.

Maybe I am just going crazy, comparing a tv drama to morality in government. Anyway, Jesse survives so maybe there is a sequel with him. I understand the lawyer, Saul, may get his own show. So will see.

What are your predictions for baseball playoffs. I will go with a Dodgers/Tigers World Series. I think the Dodgers will win it all because they have the best 1-2 punch in Kershaw and Greienke. I can't see anyone beating them in a short series. If Verlander is back to old self and Scherzer continues what he did in the regular season then they can win it all. But I don't think they are as consistent as the Dodgers 1-2 and the bullpen of the Dodgers is much better than the Tigers'.

I liken what the GOP is doing to taking the ball away in the playground because they can't figure a way to beat the other guy. This current shut down makes no sense at all. Innocent people are not getting paid and the politicians get to sit in their government paid houses and still get a paycheck.

Something is wrong with that scenario and it doesn't make me happy. Normally, I can blame both sides and believe you me, I have blamed the other side numerous times. But this time, this falls on the laps of the GOP leadership. I thought after the election that things would change, but it looks like the Tea Party has its grip around the trunk and neck of the party and it's willing to take down innocent people along the way.

I'm not a huge fan of Obamacare, but it's gonna happen, so let's see where it takes us. I'm not even optimistic that it'll work, but you never know what will happen until you try it.

Now to more dark and serious stuff. I really liked the Breaking Bad finale. I was actually sad when it was over but satisfied. Did you wonder why the Nazis searched Walt and the inside of the car, but not the trunk?

I thought the scene in the kitchen where Walt was in the corner was amazing. I wish there'd be sequel to the show with Jesse and just to show what happens with Walt Jr. and the money.

The show with Saul is a prequel and happens before any of the Breaking Bad. I would almost like to see what happens to him in Nebraska!

Oh, and what about his bodyguard? Is he still sitting in that motel room? I thought it would have been hilarious if they showed him waiting for the DEA guys to come back.

Overall, I give the finale a 9 out of 10. Still love MASH's finale the most.

I predicted a Tigers/Dodgers World Series at the all star break and will stick with it even though in my head, I think the Tigers will lose to the A's. Only because the Tigers have to travel to Oakland.

I don't know any team that is as good as the Dodgers on the NL side, but if I read correctly, Matt Kemp is out? So that hurts a bit. Though if I remember, you had said before that they have 4 good outfielders, so losing him, may not hurt as much.

  6. Kemp is out for rest of season. Also Ethier is out for at least the first series. So instead of 4 outfielders now they are down to two. They do not have enough hitting but in a short series I think they still can win with pitching.
